Colleen & Tom's Explorations
What an awesome day. We were able to sleep in because the only timetable we're running to is our own. We made our way over to the Gare de Lyon where there are a number of eateries and selected our breakfast. We then people watched while we ate. We caught the metro to Concorde station and walked around the corner to Le Jardin des Tuileries. The Louvre was originally a palace but then became an art gallery and Le Jardin des Tuileries was the garden for the palace. In a corner of the garden was an orangerie and this is where Monet created the space to display 8 large panels of his water lillies, which he donated to the city of Paris before he died. It was just wonderful to sit and view them. It was like completing the circle - we have been to his home, his studio and his water garden in Giverney where they talked of the creation of these panels, and now we've finally seen them. Musee de L'Orangerie is also home to many pieces of work by Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Cezanne, Utrillo, Modigliani and some others I'd never heard of before. After viewing them we left the Musee and wandered over to the gardens, where many other people were sitting in chairs. It was lovely sitting in the sun enjoying the gardens before slowly returning to our hotel. Paris is busy because there was a national Labour Day holiday on Wednesday, so apparently everyone takes the next 2 days off and the have a five day weekend. Bob had told us that the French have less working hours than anyone else in the EU. There are a lot of beggars in the tourist areas, and the stations. Even when you're lined up to buy a coffee! After a nap we ventured out and had authentic Quiche Lorraine for dinner, which I thought was soooo good, but Tom claimed was not as good as mine. After dinner, on the walk back to the hotel, we found a grocery store (I loooove foreign grocery stores). The bottles of wine for sale In there were 4-10 euros! We met a lovely couple from Sydney in the lift. We advised them to take the doona out of its cover (as we have done every night) and just sleep under the cover, and they gave us a hint that enabled us to get our stuck window open. These hotels and their air conditioning. The others have all been adjustable - this one pretends it is, but isn't really, and it has been sooooo stuffy.
