Colleen & Tom's Explorations
This morning we got up early and had breakfast in the Pavilion so we could watch our arrival in Marseilles port. It was incredibly windy, and the two tug boats did an amazing job. The mistral blows for about 1/3 of the year!! We then went off, all rugged up for 12 degrees C, and did our tour.
It took about 1 1/2 hours to get to Arles. We walked right through Arles - first stop was their Roman Arena built in the first century AD. it was even taller (by one floor) than what it is now, and is still used for bullfights. We also walked by the old Roman theatre which was built in 100 BC, and on to the city hall, then the cathedral where our guide spent so long explaining every little thing that she then said we had no shopping time. She had also taken us to the cafe that van Gogh painted (but not to the end that he painted from) across from the Place du Forum. I did manage to buy the van Gogh book that I saw.
The coach then took us to Les Baux de Provence - a beautiful little village in the Alpilles Mtns. We had lunch in a charming little restaurant with a wonderful view, then we had lots of time to shop - but it was all a bit too cottagy for me. But the atmosphere and charm were lovely. We then drove back to the ship. We were really tired and needed some coffee so we went up to the Lido for afternoon tea, then I remembered we wanted to see "The patriot" so we went up to the theatre. It was a great movie but it went for nearly 3 hours and we missed dinner so we returned to our cabin and ordered room service. Then we rang the girls on our mobile phone in our cabin!!!
