Climbing to Crundale for a scrumptious lunch at The Compasses!
Wednesday February 24th 2010: Only Ruth and John set out from Willesborough this morning under leaden skies and driving rain. Peter and Rosemary have heavy colds (the first ride our leader has missed), while Norman has 'trackey-itis' (from which Rosemary also suffers each time Peter takes us off-road).
After last Sunday's soaking, John has wrapped his feet in plastic bags. Ruth does the same. Smart move.
Over the busy Hythe Road we ride first to Mersham, via Sevington. Ruth wants to view Countess Mountbatten's home. We note that the trees (Elms?) have been expertly pollarded. Across the A20 at Evegate we pass Brabourne, and ride through heavy drizzle up towards Hastingleigh, Waltham and Crundale.
We make good time, in spite of some tough climbs, arriving at the lunch destination of The Compasses just after mid-day. A few moments later, Peter and Rosemary glide into the car park.
The pub is quiet today, so we have plenty of space to dry outer garments in front of the fire. The Compasses does not disappoint. Home made soup, ditto rabbit pie with cider, Ruth opts for Liver and Bacon. A most convivial lunch, lubricated with a very drinkable Argentinian Malbec which goes down a treat with the rabbit pie. Desserts are equally delicious. Service is courteous and efficient, the home prepared food is perfection. Prices are fair. The Compasses is strongly recommended
By now the clouds have cleared to leave us basking in warm afternnoon sunshine all the way home.

Peter Firstly, thank you for not being too unkind about the fact that Rosemary and I arrived by car. Secondly, it was good to see Ragstones with feet tied in plastic bags - what initiative!
