This morning I met Andrew down at reception of the hostel at 9.30am to walk down to the main town pier in the centre of Queenstown. We are doing the Kawarau jet boat ride together. The Kawarau jet boat leaves every hour and we were booked on the 10am ride but it needed more than 2 people to do it so were told to come back at 11am and see if more people had booked at this time. Andrew and I went to get breakfast in a cafe and then went back to the main town pier for 11am. They said that 3 other people had booked onto this ride so it was definitely going to operate. I get this jet boat ride free and I managed to get Andrew 50% off with my Explore New Zealand card. All he had to do was act as my partner lol. The cost is normally $99.00. We got given a waterproof jacket and lifejacket to put on. We were transported into the channels of the Shotover and Kawarau Rivers. The 43 kilometre, hour long adventure highlighted the magnificent diversity of Queenstown's waterways. We did very fast 360 degree spins on the jet boat ride. I had a really good time and Andrew really enjoyed it as well. I found it a bit better than the one Gina and I did in Taupo as we were on the water for longer. We headed back to the hostel to find Graham and Shay as Gina and I are doing the half day Nomad Safari 4WD Experience with them this afternoon. We found them and headed to the pick up point for 1.30pm. We are doing the 4 hour Lord of the Rings tour called Wakatipu Basin. We were shown areas of scenery around Queenstown where some of the Lord of the Rings scenes were filmed. These are real places - there were no film sets but areas of outstanding natural beauty that needed no enhancement. We visited The Misty Mountains, the Ford of Bruinen and the Road to Mordor on the tour. We also drove through Skippers Caynon, carved by the Shotover 'the richest river in the world' and followed the old miners wagon trail to Macetown, an early gold mining settlement. We then had a 4WD Experience through the Arrow River and learnt some valuable off-road driving skills. We stopped for some refreshments and then had ago at gold panning. If you dig up some of the soil and wash it in the river then you will be able to find gold. The half day Nomad Safari tour with our Explore New Zealand cards was free for all of us and Graham and Shay had to act as our partners lol. The cost is normally $140.00. We all had a great afternoon together. We got back to the hostel around 5.30pm. In the evening we went to Attitude bar and then World Bar for 11pm as everyone got a free shot. We entered ourselves into a draw to win a $500.00 bar tab. It was free to enter and Rory's name got pulled out. He had to have 20 people to share the bar tab with and Gina and I were 1 of these people. Rory got 7 free drinks and then the rest of us got 4 free drinks between us. Gina and I hardly spent any money tonight. I was playing pool with Graham, Shay and Rory. Usually I am rubbish at pool but the more drunk I got, the better I got at it and Graham and I won several games. It was a fantastic night.
