We got up ready to leave the hostel at 8am. We are heading to Wanaka today. First of all we stopped at Lake Matheson near the town of Fox Glacier. Usually you can see the perfect mirror reflection of Mount Cook on Lake Matheson but unfortunately it was raining today so we wouldn't see this reflection in the lake. We had some breakfast instead. After we left we passed the township of Haast and headed into the mountains bidding our farewell to the coastline. We travelled up the Haast River which was totally gorgeous. We crossed the bridge at the Gates of Haast, headed up the pass and into the Mount Aspiring National Park. We also stopped to have a look at the Thunder Creek Falls and Blue Pools as we made our way up over the mountains. We got to Wanaka around 2pm. Wanaka is known commonly as the headquarters of Mount Aspiring National Park. Lake Wanaka is the fifth largest lake in New Zealand. We checked into our hostel - Base where we are staying for 1 night. We got this nights stay free with our Explore New Zealand cards. Gina and I are in a dorm room with Jo, Nicole and Andrew. The girls went to their laundry so Andrew and I went for a walk around the town and went to see the lake. In the evening we went down to Mint bar for the BBQ at 7pm and then it was karaoke night.
