Today we left the hostel at 8.30am to head to Wesport. Gina and I were feeling wide awake and even got up in time for the all you can eat breakfast for $5.00. Bargain. On the way we went to the Nelson Lakes National Park. We parked next to the stunning Lake Rotoiti surrounded by snow capped mountains and native New Zealand beech forest. This is one of the most beautiful spots in the world. Nelson Lakes National Park is a picturesque wilderness area of glacier lakes, beech forests and mountains. The forest is alive with birds including torntits, robins, the tiny rifleman and the south island kaka. A highlight of the mountains is the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project. This is 825 hectares of land that has been set aside as an island like mainland refuge. People were jumping in the freezing cold water of Lake Rotoiti. Afterwards we drove to Murchison where we picked up 2 guys who are joining our bus today. One of them is called Mark Blundell who is in fact the son of Mark Blundell from Formula One. The guy definitely looks like his father having met Mark Blundell at one of the ITV's Christmas Parties. He is travelling with his friend Ben. From Murchison we drove down the amazing Buller Gorge. Buller Gorge is New Zealand's longest and is often described as the most scenic drives in the South Island. We travelled alongside the almighty Buller River which rises from Lake Rotoiti and flows into the Tasman Sea at Westport. Before we got to Westport we went to Buller Adventure Tours where some people did quad biking, horse trekking or jet boating in the afternoon. Gina and I didn't do any activities so we headed with the others to our hostel - Bazils where we are staying for 1 night. The hostel is really nice and its just like being in your own home. The hostel is family run. In the afternoon we watched Anchorman and Austin Powers and then Final Destination 2 in the evening. Some people went out to a local bar including Gina but others stayed in and watched the film.
