What a day….I think I need a holiday. The rain was pretty intense last night, so now all the dirt roads are mud roads. We got bogged a fair few times today. At one point we actually had to wait for a new road to be constructed until we could move on.We waited an hour and then the locals managed to get a digger in to remove the truck that was bogged in the mud in front of us.I remember watching the digger lift and push the truck out and thinking, this will not end well.
After that we got about 1km up the road and the truck wouldn't get up the hill in the mud.We had to get the sand mats out and basically push the truck up the whole hill.It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, physically. The sand mats wouldn't stay in place and our feet couldn't grip the ground, we were covered in mud and completely exhausted. In the end we put the sand mats under us so we could get some grip to push the truck. Some of the locals actually helped us, at times Dave would get a bit of traction going and just have to keep driving as far as he could get, before getting stuck again. With the rest of us traipsing up the hill after the truck in the mud.
We finally got the truck onto a "good" road and drove for about another hour in the direction of Gonder. We got out and had a Dirty Gertie photo with the whole group. We got into Gonder and set up camp, we were supposed to be in a hotel, but we had arrived an entire day early.
Kat and I set up our tent and went off into town.We found an amazing bar, which was actually in a bridge across the street. It was like a cocktail bar and we, in our dirty, unwashed, muddy, overlander clothes we the worst dressed people in there. They had Gin for Kat and Jack Daniels for me and were playing corny western music like Peter Andre…we dug in for the night.
