For a drive day, today has been very interesting. We set off from the Bale Mountains early this morning and drove down the mountains back into civilisation, sort of. The drive down from the mountains was amazing, for the most part we were above the clouds and the scenery was spectacular. We stopped about half way down, as all the trucks in front of us had stopped for a pee stop. The locals came up to the windows and offered us food. I tried the big donut like thing, which was actually quite savory.
We got down the mountain and stopped for lunch, as usual with an audience of Ethiopian kids. When we went to leave, we realised we were bogged in the mud. We had to get the sand mats out to get the truck unstuck, we had to push from the front and rock the truck back and forwards to dislodge it. It was so much fun with Dave yelling at us "Rock it, baby rock it!" The trip has finally gotten into the rough part I was expecting and I am loving it!
After dislodging the truck Sarah asked us if we would like to drive straight to Addis, as it was going to rain and we were supposed to be bush camping. The vote was unanimous, except for me who jokingly called out "No! I want to sleep in the mud!" Sarah brought some mud on the truck for me.
When we dislodged the truck we realised we now needed to change a tyre. Dave drove us back into Sheshmeene and had the tyre changed for the equivalent of $3. The rest of us went with Daster and sat in a hotel and had a drink. We set off for Addis and about an hour out, Daster jumped off the truck and got us all samosas, which were awesome. We arrived in our hotel in Addis Ababa at 9pm, 14 hour drive day, brutal!
We had dinner in the restaurant in the hotel and then Guy, Yngvar and I went to the Poco Loco club upstairs, which turned out to be a strip club. Only I could manage that in Ethiopia.
