We had an early start today to go see the temple of Karnak. We met our guide Tony and then walked to the temple as it is not very far from where we are staying. It was a really hazy horrible day and the haze seemed to trap the heat in, making it muggy as well as hot.
We reached the temple and Tony showed us around, despite the fact that I had been here before I still followed the guide around and Tony actually had me reading some of the hieroglyphs off the walls, which I quite enjoyed. He took us through to the sacred lake, which to my surprise had been filled. It was being excavated last time I was here, I never imagined I would ever see it with water in it. I looked at it for ages, imagining what it would have been like in antiquity and a heron sailed down and skimmed the surface, it truly looked wonderful. We said goodbye to Tony, and Siobhan and I decided to stay and explore the huge temple complex a while longer.
First we had a drink next to the sacred lake and then we walked off in another direction and found a temple that was still under restoration. It was a large structure, with beautifully coloured columns and Thoth statues in the guise of baboons.
We left the temple and got a cab to Oasis café, where we had breakfast in the air-conditioning. Again for the rest of the day I just hung around at the hotel, before going out to dinner in Luxor at Jamboree restaurant. I had steak and it was awesome. After dinner, Siobhan and I had a walk around the souq, but it was absolute hassle city and we ended up leaving.
I walked into a convenience store and bought an ice tea and some cigars and we were invited to stay and chat with the shop keeper which was nice. Taib, was a young accounting student and was fascinated to hear about our travels. It was one of those nice moments, when someone isn't trying to scam you. We walked back to the hotel, we are getting up early tomorrow to head out for the oases road, the reason I came back to Egypt.
