We had our private driver today to take us to all the pyramid sights, we met him at 9am, his name was Ashlaf. We drove straight out to Giza and we stopped to take pictures on a bridge overlooking the island in the middle of the Nile. I poked Tim and said, "Guess what? You're going to the Pyramids today!"
We arrived at Giza and went to pay to go in, we were of course, immediately set on by souvenir hawkers and camel drivers. We visited the Sphinx first, Tim had the same reaction everyone else seems to have there, "I thought it was bigger."We managed to get in there and apart from one tour group, it was empty. I thought of how it was when I went with Dragoman and couldn't believe our luck, especially considering what a nice day it was. It wasn't too hot, we had a perfectly clear sky and a cool breeze was blowing. Now it's summer here, and meant to be unbearable, like it was the day I got back from Libya, it was a humid 49 degrees that afternoon.
We took some really good photos at the Sphinx and then walked up to the pyramids. We stopped on the way to go into the pyramid of Hetepheres, Khufu's mother. It was really humid in there and I don't think Tim was expecting it to be so grueling with the crowds and the humidity. We took some good photos of the pyramids and sat around outside the mastaba tombs for a while.
We came back down past the sphinx and couldn't pass up eating KFC, and looking out the window at the pyramids. Ben called while we were eating and asked where I was, I told him where we were and he laughed. We met back up with the driver and went out to Saqqara. I still can't get over how bad the restoration on the Step Pyramid is being carried out. More and more I actually find myself unable to even look at it. I realised I was actually avoiding looking at it at one point. I showed Tim and Fiona the view to Dashur, which, due to the lovely weather we would actually see. The Red Pyramid, Bent Pyramid and Black Pyramid could all be seen quite clearly.
We went back in the other direction and I took Tim and Fiona in the pyramid of Teti and the mastaba tomb of Khagemni, which they really enjoyed. We then set off for Dashur, we climbed up the Red Pyramid and almost crawled down the 65m long entrance way into the chambers below. We were the only ones there and Tim started singing the Indiana Jones theme, as we were descending into the burial chamber, I of course joined in on that one. We arrived at the rickety old staircase, leading into the final chamber and I insisted we take it one at a time as it is very old and poorly maintained. Despite my caution, two Egyptian guys came thundering up while I was in mid climb, leaving me rather rattles and Tim and Fiona laughing.
We had a bit of a walk around Dashur, after the long climb out of the pyramid, and I got some nice photos of the pyramid and the Bent pyramid, which is one of my favourites. The only guard there, started to hassle us and as Tim put it, "It felt funny saying 'No' to a guy with a machine gun." So we got in the car and drove back to the hotel, where we went and had McDonalds before promptly crashing out.
We woke up around dinner time and went out for dinner, to Felfela, the same place I had gone to with Dragoman, we had an amazing dinner and it was fun trying all the local food. We all felt like slipping into a food coma afterwards. I wore my new galabaya out also, which was interesting. After dinner I took Tim and Fiona to a sheesha café and we sat and smoked for a bit. I had cherry, Tim had peach and Fiona had apple. The peach one was the strongest and really knocked me about. I sat in the chair lolling about and giggling stupidly at Tim when he attempted to smoke all three sheeshas at once. We walked back to the hotel and I had a cigar with Tim on the balcony before going back to my own room to bed around 3am.
