And I thought my adventuring days in the immediate future were over! What a way to spend my last day in Egypt.
We left the hotel at 9am and made our way out to Dashur, the drive took about an hour and when we arrived, Mum and Dad were blown away by the size of the Red Pyramid. We walked completely around the pyramid and took photos of the Bent Pyramid in the distance. This pyramid is in a military area and cannot be visited. Or so we thought…..
We got back in the car and the driver started going a way I was not familiar with, straight toward the Bent Pyramid on a paved road. I had never been this close and thinking I never would again, started frantically taking photos out the window. We ended up pulling up right in front of Bent Pyramid and coming to a stop.
The driver looked at me and said, "Take your time", all this time I had been told, this area was forbidden, when really, other drivers had just been too lazy to drive out here. I walked past the one policeman standing there and virtually ran towards the oddly shaped pyramid. As I ran tourist police seemed to come from everywhere and one on a camel persisted in following us around explaining things. My pet hate. I asked him nicely if we could explore the site ourselves and he said we could, but persisted in following us. I then asked politely if he could please leave us alone to explore the site, he still persisted in following us.
I absolutely lost it. I yelled at him to stop following us and that I wasn't going to give him any money. I kept going using a bit of choice language, I can't actually remember exactly what I said, I completely lost my temper. I know I said the phrase, "I've had it with (insert annoying Egyptian habit designed to get money out of tourists here) a fair few times. He ended up riding away on his camel saying, "Ok I am bad" in a lame attempt to make me feel guilty. It had no effect on my rage, "Yes you are bad!" I screamed after him, "You need to learn to leave people alone!"
After my altercation with the guard, Dad (who had chastised me about having a screaming match with a man with a large gun) and I continued to explore the area. We walked around the pyramid and took photos of the Black Pyramid of Amenemhat III, which was now quite close to us. I wonder how forbidden it is to go to that one I thought to myself. Around the back of the pyramid, was a small pyramid built for a queen, it was in very good condition and it was really nice to see it as the larger pyramid hides it in the view from the Red Pyramid.
The bent pyramid still has most of its casing and up close, you can see how the blocks fit together. The severity of the difference in angle of the pyramid can also better be seen from right at the base of the pyramid. Dad and I were the only people there and it was again wonderful to be wandering among pyramids in the middle of the desert. I don't think I will ever get sick of doing that.
We left Dashur and headed back to Cairo and went off and had lunch at the Hilton. We all had pie and Mum and Dad had beer. We then went off to get the train to Coptic Cairo. First I had to get Mum and Dad across the Ramses highway. It's hard enough playing human frogger in the traffic with just yourself, let alone with two other people. I think I'm going to be playing frogger on expert when I get home.
We got to the station and got the train to Mar Girgis and visited the hanging church and the Crypt, again not too much was open in the late afternoon, so we weren't there for very long. We got the train back to Downtown and walked back to the hotel and promptly collapsed for a few hours. We went out again briefly for dinner and fed a lot of it to this beautiful black cat who was hanging around the shopping centre. The little cat was a truly beautiful creature with a lovely nature. I would have given up all my African souvenirs if I could have just taken her home with me.
After dinner we want back to the hotel as we are flying to Abu Dhabi tomorrow. I am also going to attempt to get a small armory through Cairo airport. Say a prayer or two for your old mate K people.
