Vienna is everything I expected of Austria, all of the buildings are the stereotypical Austrian style. It is a very beautiful city and even the "average" buildings look good. There are over 80 museums covering everything you would ever want in one...and we didn't see any, or at least the insides of them. We went coffee shop hopping, a close cousin of bar hopping, and visited about 6 or 7 coffee shops a day. Needless to say, I was buzzed out of my mind the entire time we were there, an espresso an hour really adds up. The atmosphere is really relaxed at the coffee houses and its not abnormal to read a book or a magazine for an hour or two without buying anything other than an espresso when you first get there. So I ended up reading about two books in Vienna from all of our coffee shop time. We had a couple recommendations from Lauren (Sean's little sister) since she studied here. One of the recommendations that turned out well, although they were all hard to find, was a traditional Austrian fare restaurant, I had some great sausages, mustard, and potato salad. One of my favorite meals here in Europe. Sean finished off the meal by finishing a piece of apple strudel as big as your head (all honor to La Bamba burritos) to the point I pretty much had to push him through the door frame. Another good recommendation by Lauren was the Goulash Museum, which was actually a restaurant that served all types of goulash and it was exceptional. So I guess if you count that as a museum then we went to one after all.
Vienna is one of my favorite cities in Europe, probably second only to Barcelona. It doesn't quite have the huge architecture of London or Barcelona but like I said earlier, the average buildings are much better than anywhere else we've been, nothing is ordinary. However, the Hofburg is a huge building, it includes the imperial palace, multiple museums, and who knows what else. It might be the largest building we've seen in terms of land area occupied, it's huge. We spent two and a half days here but I could definitely come back and spend a lot more time.
