Salzburg is an easy city to visit because the old center is so compact, you can see all the main sights within half a day. We spent most of the first day going through a castle overlooking the city, it's supposed to be the largest fully preserved castle in Europe. It was pretty big but not overhelming, and there were a couple museums inside. One of the museums was a Marionette doll museum and I have no idea why that would be in a castle. However, one of the museums had a audio tour which covered the history of the castle over almost 1000 years. Salzburg is located between three hills and the castle is on the top of one so the view is very good from the top tower. There were three very large cathedrals in the town also.
The town is absolutely obsessed with Mozart (his birthplace) and the Sound of Music. Everywhere you go you'll see something about one of those two. All the hostels play The Sound of Music at least once daily, needless to say I didn't have the patience to watch it, I think it's like 4 hours long, or at least it seems.
Our second day was strictly a relax day, we just sat around and caught up on sleep. Salzburg is a good city to relax because there are a lot of really good views from the hills.
Also, Salzburg is our launching point for Oktoberfest because it's close to Munich and it's much cheaper, so we'll be training back and forth everyday.
