Day 306, 6 May 2013, Manhattan, New York. Last full day. Last night. Must. Keep. Going. We've reached Day 7 of our New York Passes and we're still going strong. Well we're going at least. Didn't actually wake up until 10 am... nevertheless we were up, showered, dressed and down at the Circle Line pier by 9.15 am to get tickets for The Beast. The only jetboat operating in New York's rivers, this is a massive boat and due to being early (though not awake), we planted ourselves at the front of the line and got the two front seats in the boat. It roared out of the dock at 10 am on the dot and - THEN WE WOKE UP!!!!! Wow - out to the Statue of Liberty and back in 30 minutes - music pounding, smacking the waves, wind whipping past our faces - insane - intense. Too cool. The queue was massive when we arrived back at 10.30 am. When it comes to New York sightseeing, the early bird gets the bagel that's for sure. We found an all American diner on the way back to 8th Avenue - full of locals working their way through big breakfasts and bottomless cups of coffee - so we enjoyed our first diner experience with a late breakfast. The plan was to visit the Natural History Museum, but we were foiled at the first turn - 40 blocks is a bit far to walk and the A-C-E train lines were shut down in both directions due to a police investigation at an uptown station. We persevered and started walking to the 1-train, but tripped over a menswear store we'd seen earlier in the week - then lost. Spent an hour getting some great bargains for James's wardrobe - a lot of his gear has died recently and the situation was dire. Too late by 12 noon for the history museum, so we found a train line that was running and went downtown to Greenwich Village for a walking tour that was included in the NY Pass. The guide was 35 minutes late due to subway issues, which certainly didn't endear him to the 25 tourists who'd managed to get there on time using the subway. We ended up doing about a quarter of the tour before we got "lost". You may have heard the phase "as boring as batsh*t". Well batsh*t" just got promoted. It's now the second most boring thing in the world next to this tour guide. We were down that way so cut loose and headed on foot into the East Village - revisited our favourite NY dumpling house and then Veniero's bakery for dessert. If you're in the city and keen for high-end shopping - 11 Consignment Boutique in the village is a grand spot to shop. Two visits and we've turned into regular customers. What can I say - NY has shops and you just don't want to stop. Made it back to Broadway with time to spare to put on some glad rags and get down to the Nederlander Theatre on W41st St. for our third and final attempt to win the Newsies musical lottery. AND WE DID! Which is lucky because we leave tomorrow... We had a happy hour drink in the the bar next door and the show was fabulous - almost a full house on a Monday night. Having been here a full week we've found out in New York, every night is Saturday night - Broadway was hopping. We had a late dinner (10 pm) - not fashionably late, rather horrendously late at our NY haunt for fast, fresh, inexpensive Asian food - Satya Eastern Kitchen on W46th St. Extra 10% off when we showed our show tickets... Less than $16 for dinner for two. New York has certainly cost us a few dollars (tonight, dinner and a Broadway show, for two, $76!) but we've managed four super Broadway shows for less than $150 for each of us (which is basically the price of one regular show ticket). More than one way to live like a local in this town - Never, Ever, Pay Retail.
