Day 297, 27 April 2013, Niagara Falls, New York. And it is important to keep an eye on that... some hotel booking websites refer to Niagara Falls irrespective of whether the hotel is on the Ontario, Canada side of the river or on the New York, USA side... trap for folks who need visas! With thanks to the Fairy Godmother of early check-in times, our first business in Niagara Falls was a snooze. But then we got out and strolled down to Goat Island to view the stunning Horseshoe and Bridal Veil falls. Then over to the main viewing area for the big event - the American Falls. The colour of the falls is identical to the Moldavite we bought in Cesky Krumlov - a pale, translucent green, but it is the roar of hurtling water that is the most incredible thing about waterfalls. What's great about visiting Niagara is that the falls are no more than a gentle stroll from most hotels. Funniest moment today? No - not the signs prohibiting climbing over the railing (really? it happens so often they need to put signs up every 2 metres?) Nope - it was listening to a guy at the Visitor Centre wanting the exact street address for the carpark on Goat Island to put into his GPS. The staff member was very good about it we'd have to say... as she instructed him to go outside and drive half a block in the direction of the signs saying Goat Island... and once on the very small island, follow the signs for the parking lots. We caught up on some movie viewing last evening (Argo - loved it. Worth a watch.) Then around 9.30 pm we tootled down to the American Falls again to see the weekend illuminations - Wow! It really is a simple trick, but so worth going to see the coloured lights on the water. We're taking a stroll over the Rainbow Bridge tomorrow - a few hours in Ontario, Canada to see the falls from the prime vantage point. It will be our first official border crossing on a bridge (having arrived in countries via planes, trains, ferries, buses and on foot, accompanied by goats in Africa... we like to keep track of our many and varied methods of arrival!)
