Day 305, 5 May 2013, Manhattan, New York - The Guggenheim, The Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the "Real" Brooklyn Tour (thank god - on a bus!) We were up bright and early and made it to The Guggenheim just 15 minutes after opening - folks around, but still very peaceful. We took the lift to the top of the Frank Wright building and walked down the inner spiral. We are consciously trying to expose ourselves to modern and contemporary art to expand our appreciation beyond the masters' classics. Progress is being made, but sometimes contemporary art begs the question of what the artists were taking to expand their minds. Saw some glorious pieces in their "old" gallery. Moved on to MOMA and it was like following the faithful to church. It was Sunday and there was a church bell ringing nearby and hordes of tourists were headed towards the Museum of Modern Art from every point on the compass. It was opened in the 1920's which means what was modern then is not today and we made a bee-line to levels 4 and 5 where the crowd pleasers are on display - Van Gogh's Starry Night - amazingly without a single person looking at it, Gauguin, Monet, Cezanne, Seurat, Pissarro all well represented. After a couple of hours it was past time to sit down so we joined a bus tour of Brooklyn. Run by a Brooklynite who was born, bred, (buttered, toasted and jammed) in the 'hood it was certainly interesting. Saw the housing estate where Jay-Z was brought up. We're not cool enough to truly appreciate this... but he's super famous, Beyonce is his other half and together they're worth a billion bucks. Huge inspiration for current high school drop out drug dealers. We went to DUMBO (Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass) and strolled the food vendors in the sun - great picnic spot. Traffic was insane (yes. still a Sunday) on the way back to town. Managed some half hearted shopping before having a quiet night it. Hard as that is to believe, it was a necessity. We're not sure if anyone has ever died from sightseeing whilst using a New York Pass, but we just can't risk it.
