Day 351, 20 June 2013, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Hip, chic, hard to beat neighbourhood of Palermo... Soho and Hollywood districts and the market in Plaza Serrano. We took off today on the metro to Plaza Italia - luckily 3 metro lines start within 2 minutes walk of the hotel - so easy. We like easy. And with the BA metro did I mention it's cheap too - only $2.50 peso per trip each. That's US$0.50 cents. Wow. The neighbourhood of Palermo was busy in a relaxed kinda way... It was a public holiday today and loads of locals/tourists/expats were out enjoying the brilliant sunshine and crisp air. We felt like world travellers as we strolled along Thames Street... crossing Nicaragua Street, Paraguay Street and many others. Eventually made it to Honduras Street and Plaza Serrano - the place to see and be seen and air out your wallet. We thought we might have missed the market (it was after all 3 pm by the time we got there and people were messing about with their market tables). Nope... just setting up. Really must remember that we're on Spanish time. We wandered back around the block and settled on a corner bar with a good menu of the day (prices halve 3 blocks from Serrano). Pictured, you can see how pretty it was - painted a jewel like blue with shaded outdoor seating, it was only once we were inside Magdelena's ordering that we realised the owner/chef must be American. Enjoyed lunch and happy hour drinks for an hour or so. You know you're working on Spanish time and it shows how late people go out when happy hour lasts from 12 noon to 12 midnight... for the early crowd. The market was gathering a head of steam by the time we got back and cruised the neighbourhood some more. Lots and lots of things we didn't need to buy - clothes, shoes, etc. Such amazing buildings and doorways in Palermo - the usual 1970s blights on the landscape, but so many art deco and art nouveau masterpieces - many begging to be restored and crumbling around themselves. Bit like the footpaths. It's the one sure way to tell you are in BA! Yesterday's walks must have really taken it out of us - we were back downtown by 6 pm for a quiet-ish night in - big day visiting the Recoleta market and the famous cemetery tomorrow!
