New Zealand
Wow, we're in New Zealand… and it's amazing just like everyone said it was. We spent the first days driving around in our campervan looking out of the windows and going, 'Wow, look at the view'. On our first day we picked up a few supplies and then headed out of Christchurch and into the Banks Peninsular. Very beautiful and a stunning scenic drive all the way. We camped out by the banks of a lake and made the first of many a feast cooked out of the back of our van. In the morning we made our way to Akoroa a small Harbor side town with lots of pretty French looking buildings. Apparently, the South Island was nearly colonized by the French but the English caught wind of it and quickly got their first and put up a flag.
We walked around the area and then a nice gentleman offered to show us around the old lighthouse. After exhausting all that Akoroa had to offer we headed for the hills and enjoyed a picturesque hike to the summit of Otepatotu reserve. We then headed south-ish to Lake Tekapo.
Another very scenic drive through roads lined with Foxgloves and snowcapped mountains in the distance finally arrived at the Lake and it was well worth it. Lake Tekapo is a magical almost Turquoise blue colour, something to do with the rock flower that lies beneath it.
On day three we hiked up to the top of Mt John for a better look over the Lake, you can get an idea of the colour from the pics. The weather has been so hot and sunny that we spent the afternoon relaxing by the Lake. In the eve we relaxed a bit more in some hot pools that overlooked the lakes… amazing. Now almost too relaxed, we drove to Mt Cook and slept at the bottom of the mountain. Not bad for three days.
On Sunday we decided to explore Mt Cook (highest peak in NZ). We went on a 3 hour trek or tramp as they say here, which took us through the Hooker Valley and ended at the Tasman Glacier. Very weird to be in shorts and T-shirt, looking at ice bergs just floating by.
After 4days of glorious sun I suppose the rain was going to come at some point so today is shopping and internet (keep you all updated) in Dunedin. Will be back soon with lots more exciting things.
