Neil's Round the World Trip!
Me and Chris got up early and got a taxi to the bus station. We got on a bus to the nearby town of Pisac in the Sacred Valley. Pisac is a beautiful colonial town situated near Incan ruins. We walked around the town and got a taxi to the Incan ruins that are dramatically located 600m above the town on a mountain between two gorges. We bought our Cusco tourist certificate which allows access to some 16 Incan sites and museums. We managed to scam student tickets with our expired student cards.
We walked up the steep, cliff-hugging path towards the Incan citadel at the top. We walked through impressive irrigation fields. The paths were a bit dangerous should you trip you're heading for the bottom of the rocky gorges. We reached the top after an exhausting climb and marvelled at the outstanding views of the valley. We could see the old Incan cemetery from the fort, it was a cliff edge dotted with holes. The holes are graves that have been plundered by grave robbers.
We passed Peruvian children and mothers in traditional garb trying to sell us stuff. We got a taxi to Pisac and met Vanessa and her sister for lunch. We had a 3 course lunch in a terrific cafe called Ulrike's Cafe (German girl ownes it). I found the music familiar and realised it was Scottish Gaelic band Capercaillie. The meal was great; pumpkin soup, pasta dish and brownies. Also the fruit smoothies were terrific! We had banter with Vanessa and her sister for a while in this great cafe.
Milu arrived later and we all walked through the Pisac market. I bought some gloves, hatt and an Inka Cola t-shirt. We ambled around the stalls and haggled over various Peruvian gifts. We also saw a bakery making flat bread and a guinea pig farm where they are bred to be eaten as cuy (grilled guinea pig). I'm going to give it a go!
Vanessa then said she'd show us her farm further down the valley. Me and Chris sat in the back of her pick-up truck and we drove through small villages, rivers etc until we reached the imposing gates and guard dogs of Vanessa's farm. We were greeted by Vanessa's mother and we had some drinks in her beautiful house. We drank Inka Cola which is as sweet as Irn-Bru but tastes a bit like bubble gum. It's really nice though.
We sat in the lounge chatting in Spanish and Vanessa brought out some books showing her famous Polish uncle Celestino Kalinowski. He was a great naturalist and explorer of the Manu rainforest in Peru. He featured in the books. Me and Chris were really impressed and amazed. Vanessa told us about her late father who gained many awards for his maize crops and was the mayor of the nearby town. We then went for a walk through the maize fields with her boisterous dogs. We chatted to some of her workers and then left because Chris had his Macchu Pichu briefing in Cusco. We got a taxi back to the city. I returned to the hostel and chilled out. Later Chris returned saying he didn't feel well and that he'd found blood in his...when he was at the toilet. I told him to go to the doctor, he has been diagnosed with typhoid. He was vaccinated against it but it's only 80% effective. We then had a laugh with Irish Steve for a while. The English girls in our dorm sat around drinking and giggling until 1am and then they left. So finally we could all get some shut-eye!
