The next two weeks focus on the roof. Some things are also happening in the house but the big changes to see is on the roof.
On Monday June 8th the carpenter's arrived to start the framing of the roof. This is the only part of the house that is framed with wood. There are two parts to the roof, the under roof and the top roof. The first week the under roof was completed and second week the upper roof was completed. To the under roof there are several parts to be installed. First the frame, then Eternit boards are secured along with the wooden boards are installed. The frame is obvious, it is needed to create the shape of the roof and to support roof. The eternit boards are the black boards in the picture. These boards are the covering over the house. Then the thin wooden boards are added to the part of the roof that overhangs the house. This under roof is to ensure no little critters come inside. The carpenter also installed the two sky lights, one in the bathroom upstairs and one in the middle bedroom.
Next a breathable barrier (on top of the wooden boards that I stated above) and wooden supports (to hold the top roof) were installed. This is then followed up with the addition of the eaves though and then the upper roof. The upper roof is very different then in Canada, they do not have shingles or alu roofs here, they have heavy clay tiles. The house looks very different now that the roof is on!!
During these past two weeks, the plumber and electricians were also here preparing all of their tubing and wiring. So as you saw until this point, the house itself (walls) are concrete or cinder blocks. In the upcoming weeks, the plaster guys will be coming to "paint" the walls. So no drywall is added but a plaster like substance coats the walls, very similar to stucco on the outside of a house, is what the interior finish will be like. Therefore unlike in Canada, wires cannot simply be installed between the beams, so the concrete and cinder blocks must be chipped away to make room for the wires. So that when the plaster guy comes he can create one nice solid looking wall.
To complete the week the crane was packed up and towed away, it is no longer needed and having the extra room is great.
Very slowly the pieces are slowly coming together. It's amazing how different the building processes are. It's been such a great experience to see. Thanks for reading along.
