Up late today and laze from breakfast until lunch. It's kayaking day today. Nick rather nervous but we spend time reassuring him. Internally we are all rather nervous too.
Arrive at start of course on Tarn. Quickly launch ourselves and spend some time paddling around tonged the feel of it. First obstacle is a small rapid under the bridge. And BANG, disaster as myself, Simon and Adam are upended from our kayaks as we hit the rocks. The other two manage to swim away fine but I continually hit the rocks with my leg and end up gashing and bruising it. Somehow manage to get back into the kayak and agree to carry on. Somewhat shaken we manage to make it through the rest of the 6km journey unscathed. Hilariously, Francis is attacked by a swan halfway through the course. It was trying to protect it's young which we were nowhere near as it lunged itself continuously at Francis who waved his oar to try and get it to give up. It circled and then sped towards him again like a guided missile. The hilarity soon became serious as we all needed to get past and it wouldn't give up. It was like a scene from Jaws. Terrifying.
Back on try land we helped Madam Kayak with her van as it was stuck in the mud and headed on home.
Showered and changed and headed to the night market at St Affrique. We met Mary and Steve there who own several Gites nearby and their friend Maggie. Wine flowed freely and we drank about 10 bottles between us. The atmosphere was fun and very French. Young and old again enjoying themselves to the sounds of the brass band. We ate a grilled duck breast and some Truffade which is a cousin of Aligot containing cheese, potato and truffle oil. Delicious.
Home and wobble into bed.
