Up early to update blog. Off to Mont Saint Michel today. Weather rather volatile so hood was mostly up. Before we went we headed into town to grab a coffee and croissant, then went to see the Bayeaux Tapestry which is actually an embroidery. It was actually very enjoyable and the audioguide really set the scene. It is just like a cartoon strip and very lightly done. Without editorial it was an honest portrayal of a pivotal period of England's history. An American asked the guide how long ago 1066 was which made my eyes roll.
This done we headed to Mont Saint Michel on the motorway. Weather was really on and off. Torrential one minute, blisteringly hot the next. Stopped at lookout across from the Mount and walked on the beach eating a beautiful baguette we managed to buy before the boulangerie abruptly shut. Hotel was fine and close to the Mont. But due to the weather we drove there and parked.
Mont and Abbey was fun with superb views, but was very touristy and a little tacky reminding me a bit of Carcassonne. As we got to the foot of the Mont coming out, the heavens opened and we sheltered under the eaves of a shop watching poor overdressed Japanese tourists run by soaked to their Prada clad skin.
Nice meal at Hotel restaurant specialising in Salt Marsh lamb. Eschewing our predeliction for the set meal, I'm proud to say we had a main and a coffee. Though we did have lots of bread and the coffee came with petit fours. Ah well. There's always tomorrow.
