Wayne's & Bonnie's Travels
Helsinki is a fairly new city, being established in the 1800's, so it does not have the classic look of the other cities we have been visiting. It is very clean and the people are friendly. The ship docked close to downtown. We visited a thriving market near the port and then decided to see one of the major tourist attractions, the Stone Church. As the name says, it is a church built into a stone cliff. It looks almost like a cave. We took the local tram there, about a 15 minute ride. When we got there a wedding was just finishing. We looked around the church and then decided to get some coffee. Unlike the rest of Scandinavia, English is not as widely spoken in Finland. We found a coffee shop but no one there spoke English. Using pointing and hand gestures, we were able to get our coffee.
