So last night we stayed out all night again!! :/ oops... The city comes to life at night though!!
Got home for 10:00am, our tuk tuk was booked for 9:00!! :/ he didn't mind though, we'd paid him $15 for all day anyway!
It was an hours drive on the tuk tuk to the killing fields, we had no idea it would be the actual saddest day ever!!!
For $5 each we got a tour around with headphones to listen to running commentaries... I could've cried!!
It was only thirty years ago when a quarter of the population of Khmer people were killed! It was over 2million out of only 8 million people!!!
They were spread across Cambodia but the largest of the killing fields was the one we visited were over 200,000 died! There are bones and other remains scattered all over still! Lots of it has been placed there to give you something to look at however, seen as the flood a few years ago made everything rise to the surface! So this was a shame that it wasn't as 'untouched' but they can't help that! A lot of the graves had been left in piece...
The most heart-wrenching part of the tour was seeing a pit of where over 200 women and small baby's lay dead! All piled into a small space just a few metres squared!
All of the victims were all decappetated, to prevent their souls being able to find peace within the body again... This was the religious beliefs of Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge!
I won't go into any more detail but, believe me, the tour guide did! You learn how every person was killed and which brutal methods they used to kill them, it's gruesome and sick! They've also recovered hundreds of the weapons they used to beat and kill them! As well as all of the clothes that some victims wore, and these are also on display!
I could go on all day about how horrible it was but I'm sure lots of you don't want all of the gory details... So il leave it at that! If anyone reading this plans on visiting the killing fields, trust me, take a cleanex! We were sobbing the whole way home in silence!
When we got home, annie went out to eat with Da ;) While i stayed home alone and blogged :(
I spoke to our friend Katerina who we met in Siem Reap on Facebook, and then went to meet her and Annie! See how you just run into everybody? She'd just read my blog, saw that we were in Phnom Penh, and we met up :)
We had a few drinks in 2 colours then went to Blue Chilli where a thursday is a lot busier :) a random guy from cambridge came and sat next to me and started chewing my ear off about where he has been, what he has done, how fabulous his life is, and how fabulous he is in general! Great ;)
Every attempt to get him to go away wasn't working!!!! It's nice that everyone's friendly and talkative but really, this is the 3rd cling on since we've been here! And he told us he had two happy shakes, he was drinking gin, he had snorted cocaine and then right infront of us he got his tuk tuk driver to get him a pill! Drugs in Cambodia are a no no! So bye bye! We left!
In the club later on he still found us! People here are too friendly! I don't want to associate with you drug smuggling, off your head, Pete Doherty wannabe!!
The reason I'm like this is, Phnom Penh has such a dark side of violence, and theft, one woman was shot two nights ago not far from the river! And a lady we heard about was travelling through the airport, had drugs planted on her!!!
I don't think il ever be scared walking down Anlaby road at night again! :D
