Cockatoo Island was our destination for sight seeing today. Brought a daily bus/ferry ticket which was $50 for all of us!! Can now understand why people take advantage of the funday Sunday as that only cost us $10. Anyhow, still cheaper than paying for parking and ferry tickets.
So caught a bus to Manly Warfe again, then went to Circular Quay to catch a futher ferry to Cockatoo Island. Froze our bumbs off for an hour while we waited for the last ferry, warmed up with a coffee while the girls enjoyed another aborignal performance on the deck.
Todays weather is probably the worst we've had, with no sun and temp around 11oC. When we arrived at Cockatoo Island it was freezing. The whole trip from when we left the caravan park until the island took 2.5hrs. Didnt know was going to take that long but we all still enjoyed it.
Anyhow, we got there and had yet another picnic lunch (sure will get sick of these after a while, might have to jazz it up maybe) then we started with a look around. Cockatoo Island is a fascinating place where convicts used to be housed in a prison, then went on to be a girls school. The main purpose of the island was were the big ships used as a major dockyard and repair facility for ships in the World War 2. It was quite fascinating to see the old photographs that the island used to be fully occupied by buildings, but now only a few still stand. The old ship repair equipment looked cool with its rust and erosion. Also the remains of some of the old prison and guard house looked amazing and l tried to get a bit artsy with my camera (will upload to an album at a later date). The island has an upper and lower part and the girls did another fantastic day of walking, Meg slightly better than usual. We left at about 2:15 and headed back to the caravan park by a couple of ferry's and a bus. Got home around 5:00pm, very tired and think the last few weeks are catching up. Will be having a slow day tomorrow, restocking supplies and doing the washing for preparation for the Blue Mountains Friday.
