Day 46. Grand Junction, Colorado.
It's been a day of canyons and dramatic red rock (sandstone) scenery. First activity was to ride the 30 miles back up to Dead Horse Point State Park - this time without the thunderstorms. Dead Horse Point Overlook is the most photographed vista in the country. It's also where the final scene in Thelma and Louise (with the car going off the cliff) was filmed. We watched the film last night so we knew what to look for.
We then headed back to Moab and north on Route 128 (the Dinosaur Diamond Scenic Byway), following the Colorado River through various canyons. We'd bought some boil in the bag camping food a few days ago, so decided to stop at a picnic stop by the river to cook it. Our bean chilli and mash potato was very nice!
We then hopped on the Interstate along to Fruita, and did the 23 mile Rim Rock Drive scenic loop through Colorado National Monument - more canyons and red rock formations. The storm clouds had started to gather again, which resulted in some dramatic photos but not much time to stop and explore.
We're staying at the Super 8 Motel in Grand Junction. After a week of camping cabins it's feels like luxury to have a carpet and an ensuite bathroom.
