Last full day in Darwin and this part of Oz - yippee. The only thing I look forward to here is the deckchair cinema that we are going to tonight.
Last night I felt in the mood to have a chat with people at the camp. I took the opportunity of investigating lots of shouting. A group of Irish backpackers said that someone was being chucked out of the kitchen as it was 9pm but he was still cooking. Why does it need to close?
We had a good old moan to each other about Oz and yet more stories about how officious the police are here. They said a friend was fined for 'improper use of a public footpath' basically he was eating a take away whilst walking down it. They also shared similar impressions of Oz and were trying to go home as soon as possible.
So what are my impressions on this part of Oz. I have generally found the Aussies to be friendly especially the older folks, the backpackers are more insolar here than anywhere else I have been. I have liked the driving about aspect, the roads are empty and you can keep a constant cruise speed. The sights have been Ok but not spectacular. However they are not varied enough when compared with other countries that we have already visited. The distances between them for many is offputting.
The big issue is that this part of Oz is a bit boring - there isn't a lot you can do apart from drinking. You could say this about most places we go but those places have intrinsic interest: the people, culture and interesting conversations. Oz has excentricity but they are a dying breed, they avoid the cities and moan as much as me about the nanny state rules.
However pretty much everywhere has their strong points and those are the memories that you look back on. For this part of Oz it is the red landscape, rock art, deckchair cinema and some interesting characters like bushy Dave.
