Is this the way..? Well apparently it is.
We are back in Texas only this time in the north, also known as the panhandle.
Got out of Tucumcari and said farewell to New Mexico and Howdy to Texas. Had a celebratory moment in the town of Adrian, the halfway point on Route 66. Popped into the Midpoint Cafe for lunch (we had lost an hour so it was now lunchtime). It was very kitsch and retro.
As we got into the outskirts of
Amarillo we spied 10 multi-coloured cars in the dry Texas earth. We had reached Cadillac Ranch, very cool and about the only place in the state you are allowed to graffiti. Carried on to Amarillo and got some digs at the Camelot Hotel. Spent a while decompressing in the air-conditioning as the outside temp was about 102•.
Later headed out to check out a couple of the sights, the little stretch of 66 and more importantly the Big Texan Steak Ranch. Famous for the free 72oz/2.1kg steak, but only if you can eat it all plus trimmings in under an hour (otherwise it's $72). I'd just eaten half a bag of peanuts so I was too full to try it. The cow will live to see another day.
