Treated ourselves to a bit of a lie-in and left hotel at 11. Went to check out downtown Gallup. Visited the El Rancho hotel which was built by the Hollywood studios in the 1930s so that the movie stars (John Wayne, Clark Gable, Ronald Reagan...) would have somewhere swanky to stay while they were in the desert shooting westerns. It was pretty cool and had all their photos up. Went onwards heading for Albuquerque but alas, stopped in our tracks. A wobbly feeling on the bike coupled with a burnt rubber smell! Yes a very flat tire. Phoned rental company who confirmed that, yes we had bought the cover for this (yay!), and arranged a pick up. The van came along, strapped on the bike and took us to Route 66 Bikes in Grants. Within a couple of hours we were back on the road to Albuquerque. As we approached the air got hotter and by the time we hit the centre we were wilting. Spent all of 30 minutes in town mostly sitting in air-conditioned buildings and hydrating ourselves. As we had already lost some hours we ploughed on to Santa Fe. Arrived about 7 and checked into the Rodeway (armed with my little coupon book). Heading off out to forage for food soon. Sights will have to wait for tomorrow!
