Strange day...
Got up early to head the 60 miles north to the Grand Canyon. Got about 30 miles up the road and thought I had returned to Scotland - grey skies, torrential rain, high winds! Stopped at a gas station for a serious confab. Decided that GC in the rain might be a major disappointment, what with zero visibility and all. It will be for another time. Was quite surprised by the weather as most of Arizona looks like it's never seen rain.
So we went off down the Flagstaff road and the shower turned into a monsoon. Had to shelter in a tiny deserted info centre/loo while it eased. Finally got to Flagstaff and stopped at '66 Dog Haus' for a couple of coffees and hot dogs. The boss came and chatted and said go south the Sedona: so we did. Although it was a bit cloudy it was beautiful and made up a bit for missing GC and Monument Valley. (Still bit miffed at missing '4 Corners' though). After ooh-ing and aah-ing at the scenery for a while returned to Route 66. Stopped first at ginormous Meteor Crater to look for aliens. Then rode on to Winslow, Arizona to stand in the corner. Checked out the teepees in Holbrook and finally crossed over into New Mexico (losing an hour in the process) and rolled into Gallup about 9. Found a motel, grabbed a taco-bell and turned in. Lots of miles ridden but not that much further east.
