On the road again. Left Lake Havasu armed with a breakfast burrito and a bottle of gator-ade. Drove along a 109-mile long straight desert road with no bends. Just before Mark went doolally we reached the town of Twenty-nine Palms (one of my fave songs). Not much to it really. The woman at the visitor info centre did not know how many palms there were or how the town got it's name - very helpful. Mark went for a haircut at crazy Judi's, a tiny scary Japanese woman who shouted at him. The two types of haircut on offer were Marine and Civilian - not sure what he got.
Drove on to Joshua Tree. Mark payed his respects to Gram Parsons at the hotel where he died. I decided we should check into the Safari Inn at the other end of town. Had first swim of the holiday (4 lengths then a lie down). Then drove on up to Joshua Tree National Park for a look at the crazy trees and weird rock formations. A great many photos were taken. Went up to a point called Keys View. As we got out the car the view was incredible. Miles and miles of mountain and desert in the setting sun (including the start of the San Andreas Fault).
Back in town we dined at the JT Saloon, a real good ol' boys place. I went for the rib-eye special, a steak the size of a breadboard. Yee-ha!
