Day 114-115
We arrived at our hostel on the 20th July mid-afternoon. We had not had a chill out day for ages, so we decided to spend the rest of the day watching movies and eating. Al even surprised Lorna after dinner with homemade apple crumble from free ingredients mmmm!! We agreed the only thing missing was custard.
On the 21st we headed into town and stopped at the New Zealand Sports Hall of Fame. It was nice to read some of the facts about New Zealanders, one thing that stood out was around the Sir Edmund Hilary section. It listed some of the people that had climbed Mt Everest, including a 15 year old girl, a 70 year old women and a double amputee. We also were able to test our bike speed on an old racing bike and compare oursleves to a former World Champion, Karen Holliday. She averaged a speed of 45.629 kmph over 40 minutes which even included a crash. Lorna went first and managed to hit 32.8 kmph and Al hit 38 kmph, we then appreciated her efforts, however, we were in jeans and we reckon if we were in our spandex we could've whopped her?!
From there we headed to Baldwin Street which is in the Guiness Book of Records as the World's Steepest Street. The pictures don't allow you to appreciate the gradient of 1 in 2.86 at it's steepest point. We had some serious calf stretching on our way up and some fun taking the photo's.
We then went to The First Church of Otago, which had 'beautiful rose windows and illustrative tapestries' according to the Lonely Planet anyway.
