We got picked up by the tour guide at 7.25am right outside our hostel. We were doing our Cape Tribulation tour with "Foaming Fury" and the woman driving us was very talkative and informative from the moment we stepped onto the bus.... We had to check out of Gilligans as we were doing an over night trip, so Helen and I left our luggage in storage and took day packs.
We stopped at a town called Mosstown for a toilet break and breakfast. We set off again (through the last set of fixed traffic lights on the East Coast!) and I kept falling asleep.... It was an extremely long drive up to our first stop.
We pulled up by the Daintree river in the little Daintree village. There's lots of cattle farms around and the village itself isn't tree covered. We were doing a Wildlife River Cruise here - to crocodile spot!
We had some Daintree Tea first, than hopped on a little cruiser boat. We spotted tonnes of different plants and birds and two small baby crocodiles! Quite relieved we didn't see a 4 metre one if I'm being honest.... The skipper driving the boat told us a lot about crocodiles - how they hunt, how they live etc. It was a short journey though so we jumped back on the bus where we were getting on a ferry to the other side of the river. Due to all the rain that had been falling we ended up delayed an hour - the river was too high for us to cross!
We headed up to Cape Tribulation; I wanted to be standing on the beach next to the rainforest! This is where two World Heritage Sites meet - The Rainforest and The Reef.
We stopped at Marrja Botanical Walk, which is a man made board walk. The tour guide pointed out different plants, trees and there was like a million crabs walking along haha. The humidity was smothering when we started the walk. We were totally and utterly sweating our t*** off! Didn't help we were on day two of a hangover either so if you plan on doing the rainforest, don't stay up until 6am drinking. And partying. And dancing.......
We got back in the bus and headed up to our accommodation for the night. We were staying in the Cape Tribulation Beach House. It was literally stuck in the middle of the rainforest! It was pretty beautiful. Very sweaty though haha. We had our own little room called Endeavour 4 (Captain James Cook who discovered the East Coast named the land and rivers around here and one was called Endeavour....). The rooms were pretty basic but they were clean. There was however, the biggest, ugliest, most enormous effing spiders I have ever ever ever seen. That includes in films! These things were - thankfully - outside on giant huge webs, but HOLY s***.... I genuinely thought they were fake they were that big. Helen went into meltdown mode and I tried to keep calm so she didn't feel any worse. After a few vodkas she was ok!
We had a walk to the beach which was behind the Bistro of our hostel. Because of all the rain, there had been heavy high tides so there wasn't picturesque white sand, it was all a bit wet and muddy looking. But it was still so so beautiful. You feel like you are standing at the edge of the world! We got photos standing with the beach on one side and the rainforest on the other.
We had dinner and went to bed early. Very rock and roll haha.
Today we got picked up by a different tour guide called Ben and headed back on the journey we had came the day before. We stopped at an organic ice cream cafe(!!!!!) - best $5 I have ever spent haha there was all sorts of flavours: chilli chocolate; dragon fruit; Guinness... I had macadamia and coconut and Helen had coconut!
We then stopped by at The Alexandria Lookout which gives you a birds-eye view of the Daintree River, Port Douglas and on a clear day, landmarks south of Cairns. I feel like I say this all the time but it was so bloody perfect looking, it looked FAKE?!
We then stopped at Mossman Gorge. We went into the centre there and got taken down to a seated area in the rainforest out the back to be given an indigenous talk with a half aboriginal man. He gave us a "smoking" ceremony to welcome us and protect us in his land. He then showed us how aboriginal people used plants for medicinal purposes or for hygiene and then how the stones were used as a chalk or body paint.
We were taken on a bus from the centre down to a popular swimming spot at Mossman Gorge. I LOVED IT! The water was crystal clear and so clean you could drink it! We only got half an hour there but I could have stayed there all day!
We headed home after that but we went via Port Douglas. We didn't get to explore we merely just passed through but seeing the Sheraton Mirage and the billionaires yachts at the Mirage Marina was enough for me. Absolutely beautiful! Would like to go back and explore one day but I don't think there's much to do there.
This tour was awesome however, you spend an awful lot of time in the bus so I don't think I would do it again In a hurry..... Back to the amazing Gilligans in Cairns :)
