I love Madrid!! It is such a beautiful city! It's a much more open city compared to Barcelona. There are a lot of parks around which was nice.
Our first hostel was cute and was located along one of the main streets which was handy. We met up with our main man Dee and a few other people off the bus and went to dinner at a restaurant recommended by the busabout guide. I had chicken schnitzel or as they say in Europe, breaded chicken (lolwut) for the first time in ages and it was badass! And super cheap!! Double win!! On the way to dinner we walked past the local token black guy who stood in the same spot and danced every day while rocking his angry birds shirt that said I'm the bomb. I was scared of him at first, but after passing him about four times a day it got sad if we walked past and he was there getting down. On the way back from dinner, we got to see all the prostitutes! Hooray! There weren't many corners for them to stand on, so they lean up against the trees. They're promoting Mother Nature.
We moved out of our hostel and moved into the recommended busabout hostel the next day. It was so clean! I didn't quite know how to cope with all the cleanliness. We dropped out bags off and went to explore Madrid! We had churros which was a happy time. We kept walking and we stumbled across a bakery, which quickly became my place, and Brendan saw fartons in the window and wanted to get some so he could say he had eaten a farton. Fair enough. I'm not quite sure what they are, it's some sort of long pastry donut type thing with icing sugar on the top and they kick ass, and you got 5 for €1!
We strolled along to the main square and there were a bunch of cartoon characters around a waterfall which got very confusing. There were two spongebobs', Winnie the Pooh, Homer and Bart, a couple of smurfs, a sandwich and Mickey Mouse. I snapped a mean shot of Mickey Mouse with his head flipped up, and it actually ruined my childhood to see Mickey Mouse as a creepy Spanish dude. He saw us taking photos of him with his head off and he went ape s*** in Spanish and was coming after us, so we ran in front of a taxi to escape to safety on the other side of the road. It was one of those moments where you had to risk your life to save your life, because Mickey was pissed.
We headed back to the our second hostel to check into our room properly and we headed on out again. We came across a small casino and Brendan couldn't help himself and had to check it out. We put €5 into the roulette machine and won more but then lost it and the machine spat out €5 so technically we just made our money back so that was nice. We had a cute walk through one of the parks and saw a guy put a rat on a girls head, and then we got froyo! Yay for froyo! It was a happy time had by all.
On our final day in Madrid we decided to just stroll about. We found our way to the big square where all of the museums are, but we didn't go inside any of them or anything. We walked through markets and old streets that were booming with antique shops and it was really cute. We stopped at a small market stall in a park and both bought a botta, which is the mexican bladder type bottle you drink sangria from I was so excited about that purchase. We also bought some ither souvenirs which included small knives. We stood in the shop for about 40 minutes trying to pick a knife, but we got there, and spent all of our lunch money in the process. I had just enough to get some more fartons on the way back to the hostel so that was a massive win for everyone and we all had a happy day. Brendan spotted a take away Mexican place and kept trying to eat there for the entire time we stayed in Madrid. Finally we did and Brendan had a happy day as well. We sat under a tree and chomped away at our burritos. They were actually really good. We headed back to the room, which smelt of stale and rotten tomatoes because we had been drying our tomatina clothes for two days. So it was windows wide open while we prepared for our next stop - San Sebastián!
