FLORENCE IS AMAZING!! I loved it so much!!
On our first night we went to a big busabout dinner and for €20 we had a walking tour, leather demonstration and a three course dinner at one of the local restaurants. It was there I tried my first real Black Russian. It was all down hill from there. And by down hill, I mean the best night we've had so far. The Black Russian was topped off with 2 litres of strawberry daiquiris, which resulted with me up on stage at a karaoke bar singing gold digger and single ladies. Needless to say, I was the cool kid on the bus, hahaha. Our trip home was a disaster. The busabout guide drew our way home on a map we got from the hostel and didn't cater for drunk people very well so we ended up basically outside of the city of Florence, and had to catch a taxi. In the mean time, Brendan ripped up our map because I bit him, so all we had for directions was a crumpled up bit of map that I managed to salvage with a small black star where the hostel was at. When we got into the taxi, I, in my drunken state held my hand up against the door, and thought Brendan closed my hand in his. I started screaming and crying yelling at him to open his door to let my hand out, which resulted in Brendan opening up the door, smack bang into a Vespa. Neither of us can remember whether the guy fell off or not, but the taxi driver for out, they fist bumped, hugged it out and that was it, we were on our merry way. Then, I started to cry. The taxi driver stopped in the middle of the road and asked me why I was such a sad girl. I told him it was because we were walking around for 2 hours and we couldn't find our hostel and I thought we were never getting back. He was like aaww oh no don't worry and I was like JUST TAKE US BACK HOME OK!! Hahahaha, he got us there so that was nice, and when we arrived I gasped and was like OMG you got us here!! I thought we'd never get back and I'd never see my mum again!!! We stumbled up stairs and woke up the next morning just thinking, thank god we managed to get back. Hahaha. Good night.
On the morning of our second day in Florence, we woke up still drunk and went for a walk through the outskirts of Florence in an attempt to find Maccas. We went left out of our hostel when we should've turned right, because at the end if the street, there's two. We walked and walked and couldn't find anywhere that was even open. We walked past one of the small pizzerias and smelt it after we had past, and our reaction was dayum, so we got all over it. I had a ham and cheese toasted sandwich type panini and Brendan had salami pizza and OMG it was good. We got lost getting back to the hostel again - seeing as we had no map, thanks Brendy - and walked around and around for about two hours until we actually found our way back which was lovely. Bh this time it was about 11am and we decided we wouldn't leave the hostel again, because we had a tour booked leaving from there at 1:30. It was a good move because it gave us time to fit in a nap.
The tour we did was through busabout but with a company called Italy on a budget. The name of it was taste of Tuscany, and it was amazing. Probably the best day I've had thus far on the trip. We paid €52 each and the value for money was awesome. We were taken to the cutest small Tuscan town called Monteriggioni. Apparently parts of the movie Gladiator was filmed there which is hard to believe because the town is so small and peaceful. We had some badass gelati here too. After Monteriggioni we drove to Siena. The driving was insane. We were getting air time on the freeway and getting so close to side swiping cars I could barely cope.
Anyway, the town of Siena is currently in the process of setting up for the second run of the big horse race they have twice a year called the Palio of Siena. The second race is to run on Friday. The whole town had such a buzz. The town itself is split up into sections, where each part of the town has their own colours and supports the horse wearing those colours. We walked down several different streets and the lamp posts were all painted in their supporting colours and there were flags everywhere, people were singing and wearing scarves supporting their colours. There was so much pride, it was such an awesome thumb to witness, and they were days away from this event. We got to walk across the track that the horses will run along - even though we weren't really allowed haha - and Brendy and I decided that we will plan a small trip back to Europe again next year because we just missed it this year and it looks amazing!!
After Siena, we went to a small winery located within the hills of Tuscany called Tenuta Sant' Agnese Farm. This is where we had our wine tasting. The owner showed us his two cellars. One was for the wine and the other was for his true passion, the balsamic vinegar. He kept saying the room was full of emotion because he loved his balsamic vinegar which was lovely. Brendan didn't appreciate my imitation of him where I would pretend to be talking to the ladies and would say I love you, but you will never compare to my balsamic vinegar. I am married to my vinegar. Hahaha, I thought I was hilarious. Anyway, as well as the wine we tried his tomato paste stuff that goes on toast as bruschetta. I hate tomatoes. This stuff was the bees knees. This man has got a way with the tomatoes. We also tried his honey, extra virgin olive oil and ate a whole garlic clove because #yoloswag. All of his food was amazing and the wine was wine so alcohol is never bad. After our little tasting plate he bought out a small cup of ice cream for each of us in the tour group with balsamic vinegar on it. We were like wtf? It was ridiculous how good it was it didn't even make sense. Like wuuuuttt?! Kapow. Mind blown.
After this, we went to another small little Tuscan house that belonged to this cute little old Italian man named Giani. Giani is very bad at English names so Brendan became Brando which turned into Marlon Brando mangia mangia!!!! Mangia like man Brando!! Hahaha it was great!! And Brando mangiaed - as if anyone is surprised.
We had an American couple in our tour group, well Italian Americans so it was a little Jersey Shore. And by a little, I mean a lot. The super annoying guy even compared himself to Jersey Shore at one point. He also loved a speech. He did about 20. That's not even an over exaggeration. He was so irritating!!! And after every speech he would say chink chink which was equally as annoying!! But we were in the middle of Tuscany and it is so amazingly beautiful there that it kind of blocked out the American-ness of it all. We ended up back at the hostel at around 11:30 so we had a big day, but an amazing day. I love Tuscany so much!! When I'm a grown up I want to own a cute little stone Tuscan house so I can go there on holidays and make spaghetti and drink wine, and it will be amazing.
On our final day in Florence, we just stilled about town and went to a small sandwich place that is set back no more than 2 metres into the wall. It is called I Due Fratellini. Now, I'm no lonely planet guide but everyone needs to get on that, because it is the s***. I think it is actually in the lonely planet guide, but either way, get on that, because it is the s***. I had sandwich número uno on the menu which was prosciutto, goats cheese and spinach leaves. Jizz. It was off its head amazing, I was like just get in me. I would've eaten 16 - no more, no less - if the line wasn't so long. And!! Even better!! I had some fully sick wine that came in a real grown up glass for €1.80. Yeah that happened. After our fully sick lunch we went over the Ponte Vecchio bridge and had some equally fully sick gelati, because gelati is fully sick. We didn't go to see the real David but we saw the replica which is placed in the exact spot that the real David was revealed on the same podium, like a bajillion years ago. The lines to get into the museum were waayyyy too long and we were a bit over just standing and waiting with lots of people around just being near you so we bailed. We ended up catching up with a few of the busabouters by the pool bar at the hostel for a drink and had a pretty early night, because 8:00 bus - booooo, but next stop - Cinque Terre!!! Yaaaayyyyy!!
