So, we caught a bus to Vienna airport to catch our flight at 5:40am. Our flight was at 10:55 am. Airport Brendan made us get up unnecessarily early so we could do lots of waiting at the airport because it's fun to do. I tried to make it into a fun time to be had by all, but got into trouble by Brendan when I wrapped myself in my cardigan and spun around on the ground trying to be a cacoon. Once we finally checked in and headed through the gates we got some breakfast. I had to settle for a sand which because my attempt at schnitzel for breakfast was rejected and made me so sad.
One short flight later and we touched down in the homeland!! I was beyond excited and thought my head could explode at any minute. We made our way to our hostel and our balcony had an awesome view of the acropolis! So once we changed into some cooler clothes, because Greece is still hot, yessssss - we headed to check it out. It took us forever to work out how to get inside and we saw lots of cats along the way, but we made it!! We walked up the acropolis and saw a couple of tortoises!! One of then tipped over and he was shuffling about trying to get back up but couldn't. Brendy hopped over the barrier and kicked him back over and the day was saved for mr. Tortoise. What a lovely story. The view from the top of the acropolis is breath taking. You can see for miles and miles and we were up there in the evening. The sun was setting behind the Parthenon and the Greek flag was flying high, it was so beautiful. I was so happy to be there. I came so close to necking myself about 6 times because all of the stairs are amble and super slippery. One woman grabbed my ass to stop me from falling when I slipped. At least that was her excuse. I knew it was just because she wanted a piece. Once we left there, we went on a gyros hunt. It didn't take too long, and we found €2 gyros and it was on. We devoured them so fast. I washed mine down with straight ouzo. Although it burnt a little, I didn't think I would die at any point, and it was good because I didn't. We headed back to our hostel alive eventually after getting lost and wondering through the Bronx. I got scared. But everyone kept speaking to me in Greek so at least I looked like I belonged. Brendan on the other hand, was screwed. Especially with that horrid beard. We had to catch a train back and there was a creepy girl who just stared. Stared deep into your soul. I whispered to Brendan that I was scared of the creepy girl and I thought she was possessed. He was like don't be mean I'm bet she's nice and smiled at her. Then she stared into his soul which died a little bit and he was like s*** you're right, she is creepy. Moral of the story - don't smile at staring girls on trains because your soul dies.
The next morning we had to get up at a stupid hour again because it was grand final day!!! We were out the door at 6:15 and walked to the Athens sports bar for a 7:00 start. For breakfast I had a peach cocktail, so we knew we would be stumbling home. It was the first AFL game we have been able to watch since being over here, which resulted in a very very happy brendy. After the game I met 95 grand finalist for Carlton - Ang Christou. We high fived and I called him a legend then he said I was a legend then I got awkward and walked away. Brendan thought he met him, because when we walked towards him, some random guy called out go saints to Brendan so he walked over to him instead thinking that was him. What? Brendan logic. He confuses me. After the game we are two gyros each for lunch along with mythos beer and managed to find our way back to the hotel. Then it was nap time. We were out for a good couple of hours. When we woke, I had the worst headache and hangover. We decided that the best fix for it would be gyros and ouzo so that exactly what we did. Afterwards, we came across the flea markets and bought a couple of souvenirs. For €30 we bought two small bottles of metaxa and ouzo and a little bottle of absinth. We saw Mick with a trolley full of band aids and super glue making a sale, but we didn't buy any. Brendan bought a very interesting bottle opener and pack of cards and if it wasn't for us watching the other, I would've come home with a bouzouki and Brendan would've been bringing home a Sparta helmet.
Our two nights in Athens came to an end so quickly, but we woke up the next morning at 6:00 again to catch a ferry at 7:35 to Mykonos!! So excited!!!
