This morning we left Atherton (interesting morning in the amenities block with some grey nomad ladies having a debate about caravan park amenity blocks and what their ideal clean is, I added some input which wasn't well received so I left them to it. I also decided that I wouldn't want to be a caravan park owner - couple of the nomads were scathing in opinion - if I did become one I'd have to drink) headed for Chillegoe. We stopped at the granite gorge nature park where we fed some wallabies and did a walk over and around some volcanic boulders. We then stopped at the Mt Uncle Distillery where we did a tasting of liqueurs. I bought a marshmellow liqueur - yummo!. We then continued to Chillogoe which is about 1.5 hours north west of Atherton. We set up camp at Eco Lodge and went to see the old copper and lead smelter (we stopped at a beautiful swimming hole along the way). The smelter site had three chimneys and some of the old machinery. Chillogoe was a mining town and the smelter employed a large proportion of the town. Although many accidents occurred (i.e being crushed machines, burnt by molten copper) lead poisoning was responsible for more deaths - just sharing as I found that interesting. Alot of the site is inaccessible due to the amount lead and asbestos. There is an observatory onsite at the campground so tonight we saw the southern cross, the moon, saturn and lots of stars. Was a nice way to spend the evening. Tomorrow we visit some limestone caves.
