Happy Birthday to our gorgeous little man Robbie! We hope you liked your bike!!
Today's plan was to visit the Killing Fields at Choeung Ek and Tuol Sleng Genocidal Museum. But before this..... Bread WITH Nutella! We weren't missing that again!
One thing that brightened up the hour and a half journey.... a man who was texting as he rode his motorbike flew past us, dodging traffic. 5 minutes later, all the traffic dodging him whilst he tried to collect his phone from the four lane highway, smashed into little bits!
The Killing Fields and Tuol Sleng brought a day full of deathly silence. It's hard to imagine what happened so recently. Only 35 years ago, with the people arrested for it only 4 years ago, some of which are still undergoing trial. We had an audio tour around the killing fields, which explained the gruesome events and not a word needed to be said at Tuol Sleng (S21) as the extent of torture was obvious. Still with blood on the floor and bloody handprints on the walls..... how could such a thing happen! It was hard to control the goose bumps!
Next Job - Improve our opinion of Phnom Penh after our experience in week one (Fear Week!) With the Lonely Planet in hand and feeling more confident, we ditched the tuk tuk and navigated ourselves around the streets with our bags on our back to find 'Top Banana Hostel'. This was a hostel that we saw last time which was right in the middle of the action and this would save any late night jaunts. On arrival, there were OTHER TRAVELLERS. The first feeling of normality that we have had since leaving Manchester. A quick (WARM) shower to freshen up and the fan on full to dry Matt's t-shirt from the walk, we headed to the rooftop bar to test our socialising skills - if there are any left. We started chatting to Helen in the bar, she was teaching at a local school and also worked here. She said Kampot, on the way to Sihanoukville was a must see. Spotting another Happy hour across the rooftops we headed across the road. Char was allowed 3 Strawberry Daquiri's for trying so hard with beer over the last 2 weeks. We got chatting to 2 German guys who told us about Koh Ta Kiev which is a small island off Sihanoukville - we shall head there next week. 5 drinks each later, $9 down was the end of the Happy Hours and we made our way back to Top Banana for some food - It was amazing! With Matt feeling slightly drunk we headed to bed (the 5 drinks were all halves! He blames the heat!).
