Official day 1 of teaching! With positivity running high, we prepared the classrooms and waited in anticipation. Session 1: 9-11am. We agreed our meeting place for our 10am break, to see how things were going.
Char's outcome (Beginners & Intermediate) :
- Children walk in and out of the lesson as they please
- Children don't enjoy playing fun games
- Children say NO
Matt's outcome (Advanced) :
- A well structured lesson about the Cambodian Government...Only 1 boy out of 6 walked out due to his anti-democratic views, the rest of the hyper girls wanting to know more about Jessie J.
After the session, mental exhaustion kicked in, 2 hours in the hammock were prescribed #HammockLife. This time was spent listening to St Raymond, in homage to Rich's birthday.
Class 2:
None of Matt's class turned up! So onto joint teaching. This was a godsend for Charlotte, as 2 members of crowd control are better than one.
7 kids V's 2 adults = Mayhem!
Who knew learning the alphabet could turn into a reinactment of a day out at Knowsley Safari Park. Our wing mirrors and wipers had clearly been ripped off! We thought children enjoyed fun games!!
One positive of the day was little Sarat finally speaking to us. He now copies everything we say, he hasn't yet grasped the question and answer thing yet... we will kepp working on it! The cutiest Kid in Cambodia!! He spent hours playing with the balloon we gave him!
After the lesson we took to the computer to alter our game plan for tomorrow's lesson. All of a sudden, the day got a hell of a lot better.... Mamma's version of 'Hong Kong Express, Halton' for tea was enough to satisfy us for the evening. The next hour and a half was spent stuck in the kitchen with huge frogs and rats (See photos - Matt is very proud), whilst Dr Vyrak gave the children a talking to. Yet to talk to Mr Meng (Our 18yr old gossip translator) to find out what it was about, we can't help but think it was about how the children acted in their English lessons today but we will see.
After jinxing ourselves about not seeing rats the last few days, Char walked into the toilet for one to run up the wall beside her... you can only imagine the panic that overcame her! Since this moment we have also found rat droppings on the bedroom floor and ontop of the mosquito net, maybe some hidden surveilance is needed tomorrow (Leave the camera filming while we are not in).
