We decided to stick with our gut instinct meaning we finished volunteering today. This meant lots of mixed emotions!
We are still sure that a week is enough time for us, as we are both mentally and physically exhausted! Being in the classroom in the 33degree heat, walking the mile long walk there and back twice a day and trying to keep up to 19 kids engaged is pretty full on! Although we found a method to occupy the two hour classes we definitely felt a bit out of control and struggled to account for the mixed abilities and different speeds the children worked at.
Saying this we have loved our week there. The kids are amazing and so fun to be around, particularly the group of girls we had in the afternoons. We will both miss spending time with them, but as volunteers we have a responsibility to make sure that they are learning what they need to know and we didn't feel like we were achieving that.
It is hard to explain how we feel about finishing as we are both equally relieved at being able to have a rest and sad about leaving the kids. We have so many notes and pictures to bring home with us, it has surprised both of us how much of an impact we seem to have had in such a small time.
It was such an incredible experience that has taught both of us a lot and that we will never forget!
This means we are at a point in our travels with no set plan apart from being booked in the place we are currently staying for another three weeks. Our passports arrived back today with our renewed visas so we are all set to explore Siem Reap and make the most of all there is to see here!
