After a good nights sleep in our warm van, we awoke to heavy rain so decided to do some indoor activities today!
Our first stop of the day was at Wanaka Toy and Transport musuem. The museum covers quite a large site with the main building plus three large hangars to house the massive collection of old cars, fire engines and aeroplanes. It is all the collection of one man who started collecting toys and cars at flea markets, auctions and anywhere else he could find them, and opened the musuem in the mid-90s. Since then, many people have donated their vehicles and toys to be part of the collection.
First, we looked around the toy section including mecano, sylvanian familes, lego and of course, my favourite, a massive Barbie collection! I did spot a few of my previous toys - gymnast Barbie and the Barbie caravan, amongst the collection of a lot of stranger varieties - Japanese, Native American Baribie, X Files Barbie and Ken, Courdoroy Barbie and Barbie as Marilyn Monroe!
Next it was Dave's favourite section - Thomas the Tank! Although he was confused by some of the newer additions - whiff?? Amongst the toys in the main building were quite a lot of classic cars, including an old Morris Minor covered in yellow fur, which was used as a gimmick for a Christchurch shoe shop in the 80s - the boot was removed so that customers could sit in it to be fitted for shoes!
Unfortunately, our camera died after about half an hour so we didn't get any photos of the hundreds of vehicles in the three hangars outside. It was a very interesting place and well worth a visit.
Our plan was to got to Puzzling World after the musuem, but since the camera had died we decided to leave that til tomorrow after charging the camera today. So, we went to park up in town so we could have a wander around.
I'd seen a jewellers advertised called 'Aspiring Jewellery' so we decided to have a look at what rings they had on offer...
The sales assistant was very friendly and helpful again, and let me try on lots of rings. My eye was caught by some Emerald stones but I didn't like them when I tried them on. After trying a few diamond rings, my eye caught a Sapphire and diamond cluster ring. Once I tried it on, I knew it was the one (and the price wasn't too bad either!) and I knew that if we didn't get it I'd keep thinking about it...so Dave bought it for me! Outside the shop, he put it on my finger (my 'other' engagement ring now on my other hand!)...but didn'tdo the whole thing again....we'll leave that on the beach in Fiji!
All this jewellery shopping had made us hungry, so we stopped at a cafe for lunch, before getting a few things from the supermarket and heading back to the site. There we relaxed for the rest of the afternoon, watching TV and admiring my ring! For tea we made meatballs, then shared a bottle fo wine, while watching X Factor USA (judges houses!). Later on in the van we played our first ever game of 'ipod name that tune' that I'd thought up! It was nice to listen to some good music again after 9 weeks of Tourism Radio's easy listening tunes!
