Norway - day seven
Another day full of adventure.
We began by driving into Geiranger, parking our car in the ferry queue and going to look in some souvenir shops. Andrew and I headed back to the car while mum and dad went to buy some tea bags. They arrived back at the car just in time as the car in front of us had already been loaded on the ferry and they were waiting on us.
On the ferry we enjoyed a tea/coffee/hot chocolate and large pancakes with whipped butter and sugar. It was a nice treat. There were lots on old farms dotted along the fjord. They told us about some, one they said they had to tether the children on short ropes to stop them falling off the cliff. It was very high up. We had lunch sitting beside the fjord after disembarking the ferry.
From there we headed through a tunnel and over a hill before boarding another short ferry to Liabygda. This took us to the national tourist route to Trollstigen. What a drive. One of the stops was at Gudbrandsjuvet. The river flows down and around the rocks. It churns around like a washing machine and is quite spectacular. Made better by the walkway that they have made that takes you right out and over sections. They put in grates in the floor so you can see (and hear) the water. It was the most spectacular pale blue colour. It looked cold.
From there we headed up to Trollstigen, a lookout juts out from the side on a mountain. it over looks a waterfall and the 11 hairpin bends that were on the road we were about to drive. It was daunting. There were a lot of trolls for sale in the souvenir shop, some really cute ones but very expensive. Nothing under $10, even the tiny 2cm high trolls. The clouds/fog were rolling in, quite low, so we set off counting each bend as we went. After reaching the bottom it wasn't far before we found our accommodation, another cute little cabin.
The photo is driving down Trollstigen towards our first hairpin bend.
