Woke up at 6am to go with Guy to Flea's Kiwi Experience driver's pad to watch the Wales v All Blacks. The question was raised whether there would be a ceremonial sheep exchange before kick-off…but sadly not. Wales lost and then England beat NZ at rugby league and so a good morning all round for me. Today we were heading to the infamous 'Pua Pub' for our fancy dress party. The theme picked was the first letter of your first or last name with the best dressed winning a Canyon Swing. Given what had happened in Kaikoura I thought it would only be right if I went as a crayfish, although I had no clue how I was going to do it. We stopped in Greymouth to head to a massive warehouse store to see what we could find to make our costumes. We were supposed to spend around 5 quid but being the competitive b***** I am I ended up spending 30 quid (planning to win the prize and sell it making a profit) on a pink foam camping mat as a shell, a red t-shirt, red tights, white vest and present bows for eyes amongst other things.
Upon arriving at the Pua Pub we were greeted by crazy Les, the hostel owner and oldest publican in NZ, who rabbited on incoherently before letting us to our rooms. A legendary dinner was served up by Les and Flea of two thick steaks, venison casserole, pasta, salad, potatoes and all for a fiver! I would highly recommend a steak smothered in venison casserole but I'm sure my GP wouldn't. Well I was one of the last to the bar due to the mammoth effort, it taking nearly an hour and a half, to put my costume together but everyone loved it. A lot of the other costumes were also fab and much red wine, laughs and a bloody great time was had by all. The best bits of the night included Laura woefully playing wingman for me, Guy damaging his nose on his Godly staff and Chris's attempt at washing line limbo. Definitely a night to remember.
