Probably the least eventful day so far, despite one truly bizarre incident. Woke up still angry from the night before's events yet bid an emotional farewell to the Nelson crew, was genuinely gutted to be leaving them. Landed at Wellington airport and wasn't expecting the gale force winds when I stepped off the plane…hence windy-Wellington! With no accommodation pre-booked I headed to the YHA hostel as it had the best reputation in town. Unfortunately I had forgotten that the big World Cup play-off game was taking place in town Saturday night and so they could only give me one night, which was no bloody good! Fearing that the whole city might be booked out I went to the Wellywood Backpackers and luckily they had a dorm for 2 nights, albeit with an increased price for the second night…gits. Dropped my gear off and headed straight for the supermarket.
Upon arriving back I was greeted by a police officer standing outside my room, with another interviewing a guy sat on the bed inside the room. The first officer had to routinely question me and took my details. From what I could overhear of the second officer a guy called Simon was subject to an arrest warrant for what seemed like some charges of paedophilia relating to the previous evening! Turns out he had scarpered in the morning. All very bizarre! How do I get myself in these situations?! Can just add it to getting held at gunpoint and spending a night in a pub with Birmingham's leading gangsters whilst at university.
Woke up nice and early to get a full day in. Started at NZ Parliament Buildings with a tour which was great, particularly the Maori Select Committee room, then went for lunch at the famous Fidel's café on Cuba St. Well it didn't disappoint and fully fuelled I headed over to Te Papa museum which was one of the best free tourist attractions I have ever been to. Particularly fascinating were the volcano, underwater and art rooms. Final part of my touristy (is that a real word!?) day was to hike up Mount Victoria to get panoramic views of the city, unsurprisingly when I got up there it was blowing a bloody gale.
Walking back to the hostel I really wanted to watch the NZ World Cup qualifying play-off in the city with someone, as it had been heaving with people all day and I could sense it was going to be a big night. Luckily in my room when I returned I met Dave from London who was keen to go out and watch it and had knowledge of the city's nightlife…ideal.
The first bar we went to we got our faces painted, thought we may as well throw ourselves fully into it, I definitely looked the part with my All Blacks t-shirt on as well. It was a low quality but high drama game with Rory Fallon of all people scoring the winner and sending them to South Africa! The predominantly rugby orientated crowd didn't always get what was going on, I spent most of the game playing referee explaining the offside rule and advantage.
Victory meant a bumper celebratory and long night ahead. We settled in 'The Establishment' bar/club which was a great place and absolutely packed. People kept asking me if I was Kiwi (please) and had a good dance, as is my want. I stayed on my own after Dave left, with a girl called Yvette who I had met and her friend, and finally got to bed at 4:30am having had an ill advised steak and cheese pie, the bus due to leave for Taupo at 7:45am, great.
