Venice! We arrived into Venice late afternoon on Sunday. We stay at Camping Jolly Venice, which is a bit out of town so the first night we stayed at the campsite. We ate some Italian food at the restaurant there before being lame and having an early night.
Monday we jumped on the shuttle into town, and then the 'people mover'- it resembles a monorail- into the centre of Venice. Apparently the point of Venice is to get lost, and a map is pointless, you'd have no hope trying to use it. So we accepted this and just pointlessly wandered the town. It's such a beautiful place! We indulged in a gondola ride, we had the best - what do you call someone who paddles the gondola?- gondalier? The Australian girls choir happen to be on the gondolas surrounding us so we even had a beautiful soundtrack for our experience. We visited the Rialto bridge, Santo Marco square and wandered the tiny streets and got ourselves lost. Venice is such a beautiful place. We jumped on the shuttle back, had dinner at the campsite restaurant again and then stayed in the bar most of the night socialising with people from a Topdeck tour and some people on a uni trip from England- I'm excited to come to England just for the accents!
Tuesday we had a late start, and a fairly lazy day before heading into town (after missing our shuttle!). We met people on our bus from busabout so went for dinner with them in Venice. We wandered the streets with them, met a local Italian girl who took us to a popular square for locals our age with many bars. We had some amazing gelato, recommended by our gondalier, before heading back to the campsite. We stayed out for a while at the hostel bar again, sleep is unnecessary before a bus day- we just sleep all day on the bus!
Next stop, Rome!
Fun fact for the day: apparently Amsterdam has more water in their canals than Venice! Also, there are over 400 bridges in Venice.
