Happiness Is The Road
We were going into the city again today. But before that we had to drop the camper (our lovely little home) off at the garage to have a service. It was due a 5,000 kilometre service. This was it's third service which means that the camper has so far travelled 15,000 kilometres since I picked it up in Perth nearly six months ago. The van had been booked into a K-Mart Tyre & Auto just a few kilometres from the camp site. It didn't take too long to get there despite the very busy Sydney traffic. Luckily K-Mart was just over the road from McQuarrie Park train station so we got the Tangara from there into the city. We got off at Town Hall station today and from here we walked to Darling Harbour. This is a harbour area which is full of shops and restaurants. Darling Harbour has been developed massively since I was last here 18 years ago and it was a great place to have a mooch around. I had a walk up the old lighthouse which was on the harbour and got a fantastic view from the top. We had a massive choice of places to eat here and chose to have lunch at a pizza restaurant. We had lunch to a great view of the harbour and the boats. After lunch we decided to go for a ride on the monorail which goes in a loop around Darling Harbour and the main shopping area. It was $5 for a single ride and so to get our moneys worth we stayed on for two loops. Apparently the monorail is closing and being dismantled in June which is a shame. From the monorail we had a walk down the main shopping street and sat for a while in a park near Wynyard station. Whilst here we watched all the funny big white birds that were roaming about and quite frankly looking rather shifty. They had these long black beaks and they used them very craftily. We watched them get up on top of the rubbish bins, stick their beaks in and scavenge any food scraps in there. One of them dashed off across the grass with half a pasty in it's mouth being chased by the other birds who were obviously very jealous of this good find. The birds are the Australian White Ibis and they have the nick names Bin Chicken, Dump Chook and Tip Turkey. They were quite hilarious but massive litter louts. They would throw litter out of the bins and onto the floor in trying to get at food. At about 4 we got the train back to McQuarrie Park to pick the camper up. She was patiently waiting and she seemed very pleased to see us! We then fought our way 3 kilometres through the Sydney rush hour back to the camp site. We were leaving Sydney in the morning but will be coming back for a couple more days or so in about a weeks time. As it is nearly the Easter holiday weekend we wanted to get away from the coast for a while and the ensuing crowds. We decided to have a little jaunt inland and that will start tomorrow.
