Happiness Is The Road
We got up very excited today as we were going to Sydney city centre. Whilst we were having breakfast we looked up to the sky and there was a small plane writing the word pray in the air with it's tail smoke. How very weird? We figured out later that it might have been something to do with Palm Sunday as in Sydney city centre later we saw some quite strange people walking through holding palm leaves and spouting some sort of garbage about Jesus. Obviously mind controlled religious fanatics. The word in the sky should have been b******s! After brekky we walked to the train station at North Ryde which was just under a kilometre from the camp site. Outside the station there was a sign next to the road which said 'Kiss & Ride'. Well we just couldn't resist and we had a kiss before our ride! The platform at North Ryde was underground and down two very steep escalators. I was looking forward to seeing Sydney suburban trains again. They are double deck trains and are called Tangara. It is an aboriginal word meaning to go. We waited on the platform and before too long a Tangara arrived to take us into the city. We chose to sit upstairs for the best view. The first part of the journey was underground but soon we came out into daylight. Before too long we got our first glimpses of the city skyline. The train line from North Ryde actually goes into the city over the Harbour Bridge. The train turned a corner and then we were on the bridge. Suddenly to our left we could see the Opera House. We were actually on Sydney Harbour Bridge and looking at Sydney Opera House! This was a very emotional moment for me and especially so for Jay as she had never been to Sydney before. It was just so incredible to be in Sydney. You really feel like you are properly in Australia. We got off the train at Wynyard Station and walked through the city to Circular Quay transport interchange . It is here on the harbour where you can see the bridge on one side and the Opera House on the other. We soaked up the sight and took heaps of photographs. The bridge is very imposing and impressive. We had a walk around the bridge side of Circular Quay and then we walked around to the Opera House and walked right up to it. It is a beautiful building and we stood right up against it's sails. We then had a spot of lunch and some wine at a restaurant right on the harbour. It was magical to have lunch with a view of the bridge and Opera House. After lunch we wandered down Pitt Street, the main shopping street, and watched some of the very talented buskers. We decided to get a birds eye view of Sydney from the Sydney Tower Eye. Last time I was in Sydney 18 years ago it was simply a case of paying a couple of dollars to get the lift to the top and take a few photos. It is more touristy and fussy than that now and a lot more expensive. There is a 4D cinema show now included as part of the ticket price which was okay but completely unnecessary. We just wanted to soak up the view. After the cinema show we got the lift up and took in the whole city below us. The weather was perfect today with a clear blue sky. We took loads of photos. After the tower we stumbled across the Apple Shop and we couldn't resist having a look. By now we were absolutely shattered and caught the Tangara train back to North Ryde and the camp site. We had tea and then collapsed into bed to get some rest ahead of another busy day in the city tomorrow.
