Happiness Is The Road
When we woke up the rain had stopped. We had breakfast and then headed to the Govetts Leap lookout again. Second time lucky. When we got there the cloud had almost completely lifted and there were just a few wisps left. It was a magical sight although not as breath taking as I remembered the sight being. We got to see the scenery today from the lookout instead of just a sea of white mist. The canyons were very deep and full of trees as far as the eye could see. We went for a walk from here to another lookout from where we could see a waterfall. There were quite a lot of steps down so there were quite a lot of steps back up too! When we got back to the camper we drove to another lookout, Evans lookout, a little further down the road. After this we decided to go and see what was happening at Scenic World in Katoomba. This is an attraction (or monstrosity as we later discovered) perched on the edge of one of the canyons at Katoomba. They have a cable car here across the canyon and a very steep railway down into the rain forest on the canyon floor. When we got there we found out that the car park was multi story and that our camper was too high to go in. There was a pathetically small piece of car park for over height vehicles to go but this was full. The fact that they couldn't be properly ***** to cater for over height vehicles and the fact that the place was full of coaches and looked too touristy put us right off. In addition to this the canyons were now clouding over and the view was becoming just white mist again. We didn't want to give them our money. We then drove to the Three Sisters which is the big tourist draw of the area. There are a series of viewing platforms here to take in the view. We didn't stop as the view was now obscured by cloud and the fact that the thieving robbing Blue Mountains Council wanted $3.80 an hour in parking charges! Someone at the Council probably said 'let's rip off the tourists and spend the money on ****'. We drove on to the Gordon Falls lookout. We sat in the camper in the car park here and had some lunch. By this time the cloud had cleared again and we got a great view from here. We then drove back to the Three Sisters and parked for free just on the edge of the parking charge area. It was only a five minute walk to the lookouts. The view was stunning from here and we just tried to ignore the hundreds of annoying people who were roaming about the place and making loads of noise. We really don't like the touristy commercial spots but this view was phenomenal and just had to be seen. This was the best view point we thought of the mountains. From here you could look over to Scenic World and see the railway going down and the cable car coming across. It was a horrible looking place and a real blot on an otherwise perfect landscape. We had a walk around the edge of the canyon from here past various lookouts. We walked a long way today and I am very proud of Jay because she completed a total of 1325 steps without even the smallest hint of a moan. We then went to find the camp site. We had decided to stay in Katoomba tonight and the camp site was only a couple of kilometres away. The lady on reception said that there was a lit walk to a lookout just opposite the camp site. We went to have a mooch after we'd had tea. We took our torch with us which was a good idea as not all of the pathway was lit. We had fun getting to the lookout and saw part of the canyon edge lit up. On the way back we took some great photos on the steps where the lights were constantly changing colour. The Blue Mountains had won us over today and we loved it here. We wanted to go on another walk tomorrow and hoped that the weather would be kind to us. It was extremely cold again and we went to sleep in socks and under the now obligatory three covers.
