Jack & Sharon's Travels
Today we travelled 373 Km - from Glencoe, Ontario to Frankenmuth Michigan and to Hell!
We left Glencoe at 8:25 and it was 8C. It didn't get much warmer as the high today was only 12C. Very cold and a bit rainy. We crossed into the United States at the Sarnia border crossing and it only took 10 minutes because there were 3 vehicles in front of us. He asked us where we were going, how long we would be in the States and where were we planning on crossing back into Canada. Asked if we had any fresh fruits or veggies - which we didn't - and he wished us on our way.
Our first stop of the day was in Frankenmuth, Michigan which was recommended to us by Peggy and Larry. I can't even begin to describe the first store we went to - Bronner's Christmas Wonderland - largest Christmas store in the world complete with outdoor displays, a replica of the Church where Silent Night was first sung and millions upon millions of Christmas decorations. There was even a display case of so many Hummels from Germany that it was hard to believe. It definitely was a Christmas overload experience.
Frankenmuth itself is a "little Bavaria" complete with lots of German architecture. We bought some cheese in the Cheese Haus - even sampled some cheese that tasted like chocolate mint. It was delicious. Today there was a Beerfest going on but since neither of us drink beer and it only started at 3:00 we decided to continue our travels.
Next stop - Hell! Despite all of the hype on the tv show that Jack watched on this the "town" consists of a bar/restaurant, a damn, Screams ice cream and diner, Hell in a Hand Basket country store and a mini putt. There is also a church where you can get married. You can walk around the entire place in about 3 minutes. The man that owns everything except the bar was very nice - John is his name. He gave us free passes so we could leave Hell.
One of the "things to do" in Hell is to attach a padlock to the fence, lock it and throw away the key. This makes your love eternal.
After playing in Hell we got a few groceries at Busch's Fresh Food Market and came back to camp - Hell Creek Ranch Campground.
After supper a cousin - Barbara Spiteri Stockford - and her nephew Alex came to visit. He grandmother was my Grandpa George's sister Ethel.
All in all a busy day. Got to get some sleep now.
PS - check the 3 new photo albums for today.
