The Castle
Day 4 29/8/2018
Today’s adventure takes us to the town of Montreux where we will find the castle of Chateau De Chillon. This is a castle of medieval era, many hundreds of years old. It’s history dates back to the the
12th century up until today. The savoy era 12th century til 1536, the Bernese era 1536 til 1798 and the vaudois era, 1798 until now. Excavations was carried out show this castle has been occupied since the Bronze Age. The castle has a natural moat and to get into the castle you must cross an 18th century bridge. The castle took a hundred years to complete. It was used to control the traffic between the north and south along the lake shore ,the lake being Lake Geneva. It was man with soldier whose task was collect road taxes and protect the taxes held within the castle. Eventually it would be turned into a prison. The weapon used through out the year are part of this blogs album.
One of the prisoners was Francois Bonivard who owes his fame to the English poet Lord Byron who in p1816 recounted the captivity of Francois Bonivard in his poem “The Prisoner of Chillon.
This man who was tied to a post for six years , in a area with little to no light there was no easy days for this man only the knowledge in his mind he would die here .
Ok that is what happen all those years ago, this is what happen for Shirley and I we discover a real castle with battlement, cannons, and history .We saw architecture built hundreds of years ago
But wonder how this was done, stone arches, stone steps , wooden tables embossed with intricate designs and I hope the pictures taken will help you see what we saw, it was amazing.
We were then taken on tourist drive by Michelle along the lake road where the winery are
Abundant, through small villages that reminded Shirley and I of the small villages in Italy. We were going to see the Charlie Chapman Museum but a heavy storm came over and we thought it might be better to head for home . We arrive around Three and put the spaghetti lasagna bake on, which I had put together the night before , few glass of red wine ,a bit of discussion about the day and a Perfect adventure is completed.
Tomorrow will bring a new adventure so stay with us even though the blog is coming slow , when wifi is available all will be better.
So good bye for another day
Hope you are all well
Shirley and John.
